Traditionally physicians have developed relationships with their patients that are based upon a hierarchical structure wherein the “expert” physician dictates the course of interventions that a patient takes to remedy a condition. In contemporary practice, this may perpetuate dependent relationships devoid of personal empowerment for the patient leaving them reliant upon the physician for all health-related needs. Shifting the relationship to a broader and deeper exploration into the fabric of patients’ lives has a greater potential for lasting behavioral changes and better health outcomes for them. This is accomplished by creating a partnership with patients that is built upon the exploration of intrinsic motivation and action steps structured around setting and reaching meaningful health goals.
